Muscle protein synthesis is triggered meal by meal, not by a single daily total. There's a practical per-meal threshold — roughly 25–40g of protein, or about 2.5–3g of the amino acid leucine — needed to meaningfully switch on that response. This means two people eating the same 90g/day can get very different results: spread across three meals of 25–30g each, that intake does real work maintaining muscle; loaded almost entirely into one large dinner, most of it beyond what a single meal can use for that purpose is simply used for energy or other needs instead.
