The floor rise test: what getting up
from the ground reveals about your longevity

Sit cross-legged on the floor. Now stand up — without using your hands, knees, or forearms for support. If you can do this easily, research suggests you are likely to live significantly longer than someone who cannot. This simple movement test, known as the Sitting-Rising Test, is one of the most powerful and accessible predictors of all-cause mortality ever identified.

The study that changed how we think about movement

In 2012, Brazilian physician Dr. Claudio Gil Araujo published a landmark study in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention following over 2,000 adults aged 51–80 for an average of 6.3 years. Participants were asked to sit on the floor and rise without support, scored on a 10-point scale — 5 points for sitting down, 5 for rising, with 1 point deducted for each hand, knee, or forearm used for support.

The results were striking. Those who scored 0–3 were 5–6 times more likely to die during the follow-up period than those who scored 8–10. Each additional point on the scale was associated with a 21% reduction in mortality from all causes — independent of age, sex, and body mass index.

This was not a study of frail elderly people. Many participants were in their fifties. The test was revealing functional capacity that the conventional medical system — focused on blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar — was largely ignoring.

Why does a floor test predict longevity?

At first glance, the connection between getting off the floor and living longer seems counterintuitive. But the floor rise test is not really a test of one skill — it is a proxy for an entire cluster of physiological capacities that are fundamental to healthy aging:

Musculoskeletal strength. Rising from the floor requires strength in the legs, hips, and core. Muscle mass is one of the strongest independent predictors of longevity — it drives metabolic health, protects against falls, maintains insulin sensitivity, and preserves independence in old age. Declining muscle mass, known as sarcopenia, accelerates biological aging across virtually every organ system.

Flexibility and mobility. The cross-legged position demands hip mobility and ankle flexibility that is progressively lost with sedentary aging. Reduced joint mobility correlates with increased systemic inflammation, chronic pain, and reduced physical capacity.

Balance and neuromuscular coordination. Rising without support requires precise coordination between the nervous system and musculature — a capacity that declines with neurological aging and is a key predictor of fall risk, which is a leading cause of injury-related death in older adults.

Body composition. Excess body fat makes the test significantly harder and adds metabolic load that accelerates aging independently. The test is sensitive to body composition in a way that height and weight measurements alone are not.

The floor rise test is not measuring one thing. It is simultaneously assessing muscle strength, flexibility, balance, neuromuscular coordination, and body composition — the same cluster of capacities that determine whether you age well or poorly across the next 20–30 years.

  1. Stand barefoot on a non-slip surface with enough space around you
  2. Cross your legs and lower yourself to the floor without using your hands, knees, or forearms
  3. Now rise to standing, again without using hands, knees, or forearms for support
  4. Score yourself: start at 10. Deduct 1 point for each hand, knee, or forearm used. Deduct 0.5 points for each loss of balance
